Madagascar is unique. Isolated for tens of millions of years, the animals, plants and landscapes of this ancient island are like nowhere else on earth. This travel talkprovides an excellent introduction to the reserves and cultural sights of the south.
We start in the capital, Antananarivo (known as 'tana' for short), visiting the Botanical Gardens and the tranquil surroundings of Ambohimanga Palace. We then travel to the east to see the Perinet Reserve, the habitat of the Indri - largest of the surviving lemurs - as well as brightly-coloured chameleons and many bird species.
Next its due south, through sparkling green highlands and typical villages to Antsirabe. Here we visit Lake Tritriva, dramatically trapped inside a perfect volcanic cone. We also spend time in the Ranomafana Rainforest, famed for its Golden Bamboo Lemurs (only rediscovered in 1987).
Descending from the high plateau to Ranohira, we walk deep into the Isalo National Park - Madagascar's 'Grand Canyon' - to explore bizarre sandstone rocks and weirdly sculptured erosions. Botanists will delight in the host of rare endemic plants found here. Dark-skinned tribes live around Tulear on the southwest coast and we'll see their carved and painted tombs, many with aloalo scenes from the life of the deceased. We plan time at Ifaty Beach, where outrigger canoes can be rented to explore the nearby coral reef.

and take in some of the wonderful views of the nature of this lovely island.
